(1) Introduction:
By this stage you should have at least an inkling as to God's vision and calling on your life - at least as much as God has revealed to you up until now. Click here to view the three spheres diagram again and look afresh at it to determine where you feel God is asking you to get involved.
Look again at the word definitions and see if your unfolding calling fits into any of the sheres/sections.....
Frontier Missions and Regular Missions.
Bridge People - Trainers, Mobilizers,Motivators.
Business For Missions and Tentmaking.
Senders (Which includes Givers and Prayers).
Remember, what He is calling you to will ultimately be used to see His overall Mission furthered - to see the earth filled with believers bearing His image, ruling and reigning in justice and righteousness. If what you feel God is calling you to contradicts this goal in any way then it will not be a calling of God!
We now want to see this vision come true (see Proverbs 16:3). This is done by prayerful goal setting, implementation and evaluation as we shall see in this section .
NB. This strategy may be used for individual vision and team vision planning.
(2) Stream-Lining The Vision:
Before any specific goals can be set we need to 'stream-line' our vision using the following sequence....
From the questionairre you have already filled in state....
(i) A general one sentence statement for your overall vision/calling...
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
(ii) A one sentence vision/calling for the next 10 years...
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
(iii) A one sentence vision/calling for the next 1 or 2 years (or in the case of short-term teams this could be a matter of weeks/months)..
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
(iv) Now we need to break the last vision/calling statement into it's various 'vision areas' or 'ministries'...
1. ____________________________________________
2. ____________________________________________
3. ____________________________________________
4. ____________________________________________
Now, for each of
these areas/ministries , list three or four goals (after having read this
PopUp on
Goal Setting)...
AREA ONE:
1. ____________________________________________
2. ____________________________________________
3. ____________________________________________
4. ____________________________________________
AREA TWO:
1. ____________________________________________
2. ____________________________________________
3. ____________________________________________
4. ____________________________________________
AREA THREE:
1. ____________________________________________
2. ____________________________________________
3. ____________________________________________
4. ____________________________________________
AREA FOUR:
1. ____________________________________________
2. ____________________________________________
3. ____________________________________________
4. ____________________________________________
(3) Implementation:
'A goal well planned is 50% achieved.'
Good implementation of your vision begins with a good plan. Use this PopUp PLANNING CHART for EACH GOAL you have written in EACH AREA of ministry using the following pointers...
(i) Strategizing: This refers to the steps or activities needed to achieve the goal. The routes you follow should be prayerfully selected based on your giftings and callings.
(ii) Scheduling: After the activities are chosen and put into sequential order, a calendar is developed showing when each activity is to be completed.
(iii) Recruiting : This is especially relevant if you are doing a 'team vision' or Church Vision statement. If this is your own vision, initially it will be yourself that carries out the various activities with the aim of drawing others into your vision.
Following are two rules to enhance recruiting...
(a) Assign no one to any task until they have been prayerfully considered and contacted, and have freely volunteered to do the task.
(b) Each step is assigned to someone who has agreed to be responsible to see that step carried out on schedule (they can use the same guidelines to recruit others also).
(iv) Monitoring: Resourcing involves determining and providing such needs as equipments, space, money and volunteer workers.
Monitoring involves determining how the entire plan will be followed to be sure it functions properly and on time.
Strategizing, scheduling and assigning provide the framework for monitoring.
Monitoring questions are...
(a) Where are we in the plan ? What steps are accomplished and what should we do next ?
(b) Are the steps being done according to the schedule ? If not, what adjustments are needed ?
(c) Are the workers doing their job satisfactorily ? Are they in need of resources ?
(4) Evaluation:
This is the most important of all the steps.
Following is a list of questions that are helpful in guiding your evaluation...
I. Evaluation of Goals and Objectives..
A. What are the goals you have been pursuing ?
B. Are these goals coherent with your vision ? Are they the right goals ?
C. Are the goals clear and realistic ?
II. Evaluation of Programmes and Activities..
A. Is your programme coherent with your vision ?
B. To what extent is your programme achieving the goals ? Is it effective ?
C. Is your programme worth the time, effort and money ? Is it efficient ?
D. Are there any positive and/or negative side effects ? Needed action ? Are your programmes causing any unplanned, unanticipated results ?
III. Problem Solving and Future Planning..
A. What changes need to be made in your present activities to make them more effective ?
B. What new goals and programmes do you need to help you achieve your vision ?
You should set regular times during which you evaluate - preferably as a team.
(5) Conclusion:
We need to be goal-directed people just as Paul was! He was led by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit was not hindered by Paul's goals. He was able to speak to Paul precisely because Paul and his team had specific goals to talk about. A careful reading of Acts 16 shows that the Spirit told him not to speak in Phrygia and Galatia (v6) though it was his goal. According to verse 7 ( Acts 16:7-10) it was Paul's goal to go to Bithynia but the Spirit then gave Paul a vision and in it a new direction : Macedonia.
Group or Individual Activity: Go through the above stages with your own vison (if an individual) or the groups vision (if a group), writing the Planning- Implemention Worksheets for all the goals you come up with.
It has been said "It is the quality of vision that it comes to people who are goal minded, not to muddlers who excuse their lack of planning and work by saying they are waiting on the Lord to direct them."
Do you agree with this ? Discuss it with others.
