(ii) Shaniy (8144) - of uncertain derivation; crimson, properly, the insect or its color, also stuff dyed with it:
A shade of red is called scarlet. It was the color of the cord tied around the wrist of Zerah <Gen. 38:28-30>. Scarlet was used a great deal in the tabernacle <Ex. 25:4>. It was the color of the cord extended from Rahab's window <Josh. 2:18>. It was also a mark of prosperity <2 Sam. 1:24; Prov. 31:21>. Scarlet also describes the robe placed upon Jesus <Matt. 27:28>. Since the robe was also described as purple <Mark 15:17>, these two colors were not always distinguished during New Testament times. The beast ridden by the harlot was scarlet in color <Rev. 17:3> as were some of the garments of the harlot herself <Rev. 17:4> and her followers <Rev. 18:16>.
