The male offspring of a husband and wife. The birth of a son brought great joy to the Hebrew family, because a family's heritage and inheritance was preserved through its sons. The word son is also used in a figurative sense in the Bible. Occasionally it refers to remote relatives and dwellers in a specific place, as in the "sons of Javan" <Gen. 10:4>. Also see FAMILY.
