A name for the Hebrew people, whom God chose as His special instruments. As a holy people set apart to worship God, they were to make His name known throughout the earth <Deut. 7:6,7; Ps. 105:43>. In the New Testament, Peter describes Christians as members of a "chosen generation" <1 Pet. 2:9>.
